Little less than a year since the end of her thirteen-year-long conservatorship, Britney Spears makes her long-awaited return to music with “Hold Me Closer,” her first ever collaboration with Sir Elton John.
The track also marks the first time Spears stepped into the studio in over four years. Although the late 2020 super deluxe edition of her ninth studio album included two new tracks, they had been previously recorded years prior.
“Hold Me Closer” reworks two of John’s hits, 1971’s “Tiny Dancer”—which includes the lyric that gives the new single its title—and 1992’s “The One”, and follows the same style his collaboration with English singer Dua Lipa, “Cold Heart”, had previously mashed up other of his best-selling songs a year earlier.
The news of Elton and Britney working together were first reported by Page Six in late July 2022. They also revealed that “Tiny Dancer” was the song being reworked, and that it would be coming out the following month.
Two weeks later, Elton John shared on his Instagram a picture with the phrase “Hold Me Closer” and two emojis: a rocket (referencing his song “Rocket Man”) and a red rose. Fans immediately linked this information to the news of him possibly working with Spears, who constantly shares pictures of her on Instagram for a collection called “Project Rose”. John later formally announced the release of the song on August 19, confirming the rumors.
