Ingrid Elizabeth Andress (born September 21, 1991) is an American country music singer-songwriter. Her breakthrough single “More Hearts Than Mine” peaked at number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100. Here, Ingrid Andress joins Sam Hunt for a duet about a relationship gone bad. The title is a pun on the phrase “illusions”. As the singers down their drinks, they get more and more drunk and more and more hopeful with the optimism that they can save the romance.
Andress co-wrote the painfully hopeful country-pop ballad with her friend, Canadian singer-songwriter JP Saxe. R&B artist Lucky Daye, Jonny Price, and the Rykeyz also contributed to writing the song.
Hunt is not a co-writer on “Wishful Drinking.” It is rare for him to sing a song that he did not write, as he often finds it difficult to connect with melodies that he had no part in creating. However, when Hunt met Andress at a Nashville Sports League kickball game, he enjoyed her meeting her. When she asked him to be her duet partner on the runway, the “Hard to Forget” star was up for it.
“Usually it’s the people involved in the song,” she explained to Kelleigh Bannen on Apple Music why she agreed to be a part of “Wishful Drinking.” “The writers, my connection to Ingrid, being a fan of her, and then meeting her and getting along and experiencing her heart firsthand from her.”
Additionally, Hunt added that he can “100 percent relate” to Andress’ love of “sad bops.” They are also among her favorites.
Director Sam Siske shot the video at Nashville’s Flamingo Cocktail Club. It begins with Andress and Hunt relieving headaches in a bar, before the pair reunite to perform the song on a small stage. Siske also shot Andress’s visual for “More Hearts Than Mine”.
Andress had no one else in mind, other than Sam Hunt, to be her duet partner. If he had refused to participate, she would have simply sung it solo. “I’m not sure why, because there are a lot of people who could crush it,” she told Taste Of Country Nights. “I just wanted her tone of voice specifically for the song.”
“Wishful Drinking” debuted at #71 on the Billboard Hot 100 during the chart week ending of July 16, 2022.
