Sam Smith was born on 19th May 1992 and grew up in a rural village on the border of Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, the nearest town being Bishops Stortford. They’re the oldest of three siblings and are said to be close to their younger sisters. Their mother is a successful City of London trader and their father is a stay-at-home dad who brought up the children.Smith showed an early talent for singing, and their parents responded by arranging singing lessons from the age of eight with professional jazz singer and songwriter, Joanna Eden. At the early age of seventeen, they left school to pursue their dream, living in a small one-bed flat and working in a London pub, but ended up isolated and beset by loneliness.Sam knew they were gay, they said, for as long as they could remember. They suffered bullying at school and were shocked to find that even in London—close to gay communities—they were subjected to homophobic attacks. These negative experiences, combined with an inherently emotional nature, inform their songwriting and delivery. “Unholy”, is the supposed lead single for Sam Smith’s upcoming fourth studio album. The song is a collaboration with German-born singer and songwriter, Kim Petras.
The song is unlike anything Sam has done before and signals their determination to extend their range; to experiment. In an interview with Billboard magazine in August 2022 Sam talked about their need to move away from sad ballads and explore new directions.
Gone are the heartbroken torch songs that defined so much of their [Sam’s] early career; in their place are jubilant sounds ranging from dance-pop kiss-offs to choral expressions of elation. And for Smith, leaning into happiness may be the greatest risk of all… “I think joy for me, and for a lot of queer people, is quite a dangerous place. We’re all masters of pain, and I think it’s … courageous to step into the queer joy of it all.”’
The song tells a story of unfaithfulness and betrayal, reminiscent of I’m Not The Only One. But the response isn’t grief and passivity, but resilience, humour and mischief; a definite new departure.
Rumors of a collaboration between Smith & Petras first started when Smith posted a photo captioned “Mmm daddy daddy 🫢👅 @kimpetras“.
On August 17th, 2022, The Sun posted an article about the upcoming song revealing some of the lyric. On August 18th, 2022, Sam posted a TikTok snippet of the song with Petras dancing in the background of the video.
