The National, are five friends from Cincinnati, Ohio, who started making music in 1999 when they found themselves living near one another again in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.They weren’t looking to take over the world with a demo and matching outfits. “Weird Goodbyes” is one of the few songs The National debuted during their 2022 summer tour. The Cincinnati rockers kept changing the title of the song from “Bathwater” to “Mount Auburn” before finally settling on “Weird Goodbyes”.
In an interview with stereogum, vocalist Matt Berninger reveals the song is about:
letting go of the past and moving on, then later being overwhelmed by second thoughts.
On August 13, 2022, a reddit user uploaded a picture of a poster found in Brooklyn, reading “Weird Goodbyes — The National ft. Bon Iver”, hinting that the release might be imminent.
In a mail-out for Cherry Tree members, the band confirmed the song being a part of the new album. “Weird Goodbyes” was released on August 22, 2022.
“Weird Goodbyes” is the first official release to feature another male singer.
During the rollout for the band’s eighth record I Am Easy to Find, lead vocalist Matt Berninger stated his ego was ‘too big to have other male singers on a song by The National’.
